Raised on the Gold Coast, Becana’s practice was shaped early through years spent working alongside her grandfather, an artist and art teacher in Brisbane. During school years, Becana received local art prizes and scholarships before pivoting to studying law. Descending from a long line of artists—understood to trace back to international artist Richard Diebenkorn—creativity remains an inevitable, all-consuming force. Becana’s paintings and sculptures have more recently been shown at Brunswick Street Gallery, Melbourne, and Darcey Doyle’s Art Exhibition on the Gold Coast. This lineage continues through Becana’s eldest son, Ocean Devencorn Bastos, an emerging artist at 13.
