The Devencorn Family

“From Diebenkorn to Devencorn. It’s generation after generation of family members who end up following a path of art and creation. This love of creating, this love for art, it truly is impossible to escape.” - Becana Devencorn

  • Becana Devencorn

Gold Coast based abstract expressionist and contemporary artist.

“I particularly love painting however always find myself incorporating other mediums or pushing the boundaries of what I know to using materials such as concrete, styrofoam and resin.”

  • Breeana Devencorn

Gold Coast based still life and portrait painter.

”Right now I’m loving colour and texture and how both of these can complement each other so well.”

  • Ocean Devencorn

Ocean is Becana’s eldest son who enjoys painting and drawing.

”If I’m painting, I’m painting the beach and boats. If I’m drawing, then of course I’m drawing Dragon Ball Z”.

  • Atlas Devencorn

Atlas is Becana’s second son who loves to paint. He is very free with his paints and will often incorporate drawn figures onto his artworks. He is most calm and happy pottering in the studio. If you can’t seem to find him - look there.

  • Lionel Devencorn & Ross Devencorn

Lionel Devencorn (grandfather of Becana) was an art teacher in Brisbane, Australia and who was known for his landscape paintings.

His son, Ross Devencorn (father of Becana) had a gift of drawing wildlife and engineering. He would often incorporate his love of engineering into his art.

“My work is heavily influenced by beachscapes and the beauty in the female form. I feel like my work is ever evolving and that I’m continually stepping out of my comfort zone to grow.”
- Becana Devencorn

  • Becana is an abstract expressionist and contemporary artist based on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

Becana started painting when she was 4 years old alongside her grandfather Lionel Devencorn, a Brisbane artist and art teacher. Lionel himself came from a long line of artists and is the grandson of Christopher Diebenkorn who migrated to Australia to pursue his passion for art and start a new life for himself being inspired by the Australian landscape.

Becana spent many holidays sitting in on her grandfather’s art classes quietly painting. As a proud grandfather, he would introduce her to his students and would gravitate towards her during his classes to nurture her love of sculpting and painting.

During her school years, she received various local art awards such as awards from the Energies Exhibitions on the Gold Coast. Despite receiving an art scholarship however, she instead went on to law school. She never stopped painting and would paint late into the evenings selling her paintings on Ebay ‘for fun’ at the time.

Today Becana paints and creates from her home studio on the Gold Coast. She mostly paints using acrylics on stretched canvas but will often dabble in other mediums such as concrete, resin and styrofoam.

  • Ocean is the eldest child of Becana and finds himself very content when engaging in drawing, painting and sculpting. His works are heavily influenced by nature including landscapes and sculpting animals. He enjoys exploring different perspectives in his work.

He will also follow his brother’s lead when it comes to experimenting with abstract painting and the use of different mixed media in his pieces.

Ocean sold his first painting at the age of 8 years of age at the 2021 Darcy Doyle Award Exhibition for $75.00.

  • Atlas is 6 years of age and gravitates to the studio when his mum is in there of an evening or on weekends. Loves the family’s ‘Friday Night Studio Sesh’ and will be the first one in there and the last one to leave.

He is heavily driven to abstract art and has begun painting works and drawing on top to tell stories.

He is very attached to his own works and finds it difficult to submit work to an exhibition for sale but his first works will appear in this year’s 2022 Darcy Doyle Art Exhibition on the Gold Coast.
